Why the serial number decides which part your appliance takes

The most useful photograph you can send us is not the fault. It is the rating plate, because the model and serial on it decide which version of a part the appliance takes and whether it is on the van already.

People are often surprised that we ask for a model and serial number before we will confirm what a job costs, when we have already been told exactly what the appliance is doing. The reason is simple, and it is the difference between a repair that finishes on the first visit and one that does not.

Two appliances of the same nominal model, bought a few years apart, are frequently not the same appliance inside. Manufacturers revise things continuously through a production run: a control board gets a new revision, a gasket profile changes, an igniter or a sensor is superseded by a different part with a different connector. None of that shows on the front of the machine. It shows on the rating plate.

Where the plate is

On a range it is usually behind the bottom drawer or the kick panel, sometimes on the frame behind the door when it is open. On a wall oven it is commonly inside the door frame along one side, or on the trim behind the door. On a hood it is often inside the housing, above the filters, which means taking the baffles out to read it.

You do not need it to ring us. A symptom in plain words is enough to start a conversation and enough for us to say roughly what is involved. But if you can photograph the plate before we come, we can look at what the appliance takes before we set off rather than after we arrive, and that occasionally turns two visits into one.

What rides on the van and what does not

Because this shop works on one make and one line, the van carries far more of what a given call needs than a general appliance service could justify. Ignition components, common sensors, thermal cutouts, seals and gaskets, the elements that fail most often, fixings and connectors — that is the stock that turns a diagnosis into a finished repair the same morning.

What does not ride on the van, and honestly cannot, is anything expensive and variant-specific. Control boards are the obvious case: they are dear, they change through a production run, and stocking every revision for every model would tie up more money than a small shop has. Glass, doors, panels and other cosmetic parts are the other case, because they are large, easily damaged in transit and specific down to a finish.

So the shape of a typical job is this. We come, we diagnose, and either the part is with us and the appliance is working when we leave, or the part is ordered and we come back. We would rather tell you which of those two you are in at the end of the first visit than let you find out by waiting.

Why ordering takes as long as it does

An ordered part goes through a distributor rather than being pulled off a shelf, and the honest answer on timing is that it depends on what the part is and where it is sitting. Common consumables tend to move quickly. A variant-specific board, a door assembly or anything for an appliance that has been out of production for a while can take considerably longer, and no shop can promise otherwise without occasionally lying to somebody.

What we can do is be straight about it. When we order, you get the price in writing first, and you get told what we have been quoted for arrival rather than a comfortable guess. If a part turns out to be on long lead time or no longer available at all, you hear that as soon as we do, because it changes the decision you are making.

Pattern parts, and why we mostly do not fit them

There is nearly always a cheaper equivalent available for a common component, and sometimes it is genuinely fine. Frequently it is not. A pattern gasket with a slightly different profile seals a little worse and hardens a little sooner. A pattern igniter with different resistance behaves correctly on the bench and marginally in a cold kitchen. A pattern board may be the right shape and the wrong revision.

We fit the manufacturer’s part as a default because our warranty on the work has to mean something, and because the second visit caused by a marginal part costs everybody more than the part ever saved. Where a good non-original option genuinely exists, we will say so and let you choose with the prices in front of you.

When the answer is that the part is gone

Appliances outlive their parts supply, and eventually a call ends with us saying that what has failed cannot be replaced. When that happens we would rather say it plainly than fit something approximate and hope.

Sometimes there is a workable route — a superseded part that is functionally equivalent, or a sub-assembly that can be repaired rather than swapped. When there is not, the appliance has reached the end and the conversation turns into a different one about what replacing a built-in actually involves. That is not a conversation we make money from, which is exactly why it is worth having honestly.
